Baby, baby, where did our gloves go? Not only our gloves, but also our sequins; our swathes of satin; our fluffy bits? They’ve all here! At the Shipley! And culled from the personal collection of Supreme member, Mary Wilson. The Supremes, of course, are just about one of the best groups to ever brandish a back-catalogue, with a string of brilliant songs to their name. And while they certainly flashlit the 60s with the likes of ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’, ‘Love Child’ and ‘Reflections’, they also looked satisfyingly comely in doing so. This exhibition pulls together 50 stunning performance costumes worn by The Supremes from their early days as The Primettes, to the glam Hollywood designs worn at the height of their fame. The exhibition also features the group’s music, album covers and archive performance footage as well as new video interviews. The Queen’s 19-year-old granddaughter smiled as she walked into the Armstrong Building at Newcastle University in front of the cameras, flanked by a blonde friend. When reporters welcomed her to Newcastle and asked why she chose the university, she replied: ”It’s a great city.” The university has proved popular with students from public school backgrounds in recent years. Dan Coverdale, editor of the Courier student newspaper, said: ”Maybe she has come up with quite a few friends from her school ”I think the attraction is that it’s a good city up north and it is something different but you do get quite a lot of southern students. ”There is a great social life here but the academic side of it is good too.” Eugenie will take a three year Combined Studies degree in English Literature, History of Art and Politics. She gained A grades in English and Art, and a B in History of Art in her A-levels last year at Marlborough College in Wiltshire, then went travelling with friends. A student survey last year named Newcastle as the best city to live in and it is widely known for its lively night life with hundreds of pubs, clubs and bars. Source:- www.telegraph.co.uk, Princess Eugenie Starts at Newcastle University, Sep 24th Plans to stage a fans’ takeover of Newcastle United were today being launched. Details of the Yes We Can campaign, which hopes to raise enough cash to buy out Mike Ashley, were unveiled at Newcastle Civic Centre. The masterplan is based on supporters unlocking £20,000 from their pension fund, topped up by Government tax relief, and buying a stake in the Toon. As well as individuals, businesses are being targeted to buy one or more stakes in the club, while discussions are on with two trade unions about getting on board.Neil Mitchell, the interim chair of the Trust, said: “Today’s launch sets out an agenda to include the fans on the inside track of their club. “The overriding aim of the Trust is to buy into the club to make sure supporters have a voice in the corridors of power and the current situation at St James’s shows how vital that is. The Yes We Can campaign shows that there is serious interest out there.” Organizers liken the plans to the way Barcelona and Real Madrid are run, with fans having the ability to oust presidents they feel are not acting in the best interests of the club. The move is seen as an antidote to the way things have gone at United, with huge discontent among supporters and poor communication from the hierarchy at St James’s Park.
